Hankuk Fiber, a local company in Miryang, Gyeongnam, contributed significantly to the Nuri rocket launch based on its unparalleled technological expertise.
Hankuk Fiber, the nation's leading composite materials specialist, was responsible for manufacturing core components of the Nuri rocket, such as the payload fairing and structures, following its work on the Naro rocket, South Korea's first space launch vehicle.
The Nuri rocket's main structures consist of the payload fairing (which protects the satellite payload), the second-stage forward structure, and the first-stage forward structure. These structures were fabricated using composite materials to minimize weight.
The payload fairing is the critical structure located at the top of the launch vehicle. It protects the internal satellite payload from the heat, pressure, and noise generated during launch.
The second-stage and first-stage forward structures were also designed using composite materials to be both lightweight and capable of withstanding high loads. The development of these flight models was completed after several years of development and testing.
Hankuk Fiber has been involved in the satellite launch vehicle business for approximately 20 years, participating since KSR-III (South Korea's first liquid-fueled launch vehicle) with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), continuing through the Naro rocket, and up to the Nuri rocket.
Hankuk Fiber, a subsidiary of New Power Plasma, is a composite materials specialist engaged in various businesses, including defense and aerospace, fiberglass composite pipes, and interior/exterior materials for rail vehicles, all utilizing composite materials. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the company is striving to become a leading enterprise in the next-generation composite materials sector, based on cutting-edge technology achieved through continuous change and innovation.
