Samyang Corporation, the chemical and food affiliate of the Samyang Group, and Hankuk Fiber, a composite material specialist, signed an 'MOU for the Joint Development of Eco-friendly, Lightweight Battery Pack Cases for Electric Vehicles' on the 26th at the Samyang Corp. headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Through this agreement, Samyang Corp. will supply plastic compound materials (products with improved properties through the mixing of additives) recycled from waste fishing nets to Hankuk Fiber. Hankuk Fiber will utilize these materials to develop lightweight battery pack cases for electric vehicles (EVs).
The battery pack case is a component that encloses the EV battery module. It is a core part that safely protects the battery, which is vulnerable to external shocks. Materials that are lightweight and possess excellent strength are essential to reduce the vehicle's weight while protecting it from heat and impact.
The plastic compound that Samyang Corp. produces from recycled waste fishing nets overcomes the shortcomings of recycled plastic, which typically has inferior properties, by using compounding technology, resulting in a performance level equivalent to that of general plastic.
With this joint development, both companies strategize to achieve carbon neutrality and a circular economy, and secure advanced technology in body lightweighting, which is a major topic in the EV market.
